The Mac App Store isn't the only way to get apps. By default, Macs are configured to allow apps either from the app store or apps that have been signed by an approved developer. In fact, Apple's choices around the Mac App Store have discouraged many developers from putting their apps on the Mac App Store. By default, Gatekeeper is configured to allow apps from the Mac App Store and from registered developers. Users can make this more or less strict: Open System Preferences.

Thank you for your prompt reply!
I read the link to the previous discussion thread that you suggested, and this is what I did that seems to have fixed my problem:
From nbar's recommendation I did:
Open Finder, from the menu bar Go. > Go to Folder..
copy and paste the following path: ~/Library/Preferences/
Deleted the following item:
com.apple.appstore.plist
Apple App Store For Macbook
This item was not there:
com.apple.installer.plist
Then from Carolyn Samit's recommendation I did:
Open Finder, from the menu bar Go. > Go to Folder..
copy and paste the following path: ~/Library/Caches/
Deleted the following folder:
com.apple.appstore
So actually, thank you to all three of you!
